Whats the big deal about the AE86 The first Toyota to feature the 4A-GE, the AE86 Corolla still has great popularity for it's balance and pure fun of rear-wheel drive configuration. And its a very easy engine to work on. |

Whats so good about the 4AG? -The 4AG uses a TVIS -Toyota Variable Induction System...intake system where secondary intake ports to each cylinder are opened and closed for improved engine characteristics. Some people might think this will increase performance when disableing it. But for most basic performance upgrades, the TVIS should be kept and maintained to give a better overall torque curve which does NOT inhibit power in any way. -The USDM 4AGE AFM makes less power than the JDM mapped..Not really, the only reason the Japanese versions of the early 16V 4A-GE came equipped with MAP sensor (vacuum sensor) control is because it was much cheaper to equip. The US versions came with the AFM ( air flow meter) because it can monitor the intake air somewhat more accurately in that era of technology...and thus was required to meet California's smog regulations. Both units work equally well and the only sole advantage to having map sensor controls is the fact that induction chamber modifications are somewhat easier without the bulk of the AFM unit. The performance is in no way significantly better though as many believe. E-mail questions to: |
